While working on another project which is yet to be released, I needed a break from being creative. So, I started remaking the beautiful track „A Close Friend“ from the truly amazing soundtrack of „Fantastic Beasts and where to find them“ by James Newton Howard from scratch only by ear.
I had never done anything like that before, so I was glad that I found this track which is, apart from being magical, not very difficult or long. What I did was basically listening to the track over and over again, on phrase (maybe 16 Bars or so) at a time and then trying to write it down. Of course it helped immensly that I could listen to what I had already written in order to compare both tracks.
All in all, it took me a few hours, maybe 8-9 or so, spread on a few days, to finish the track. I’m pretty delighted with how it turned out, although I now really crave a better childrens choir – my old QL Symphonic Choirs really reached it’s limits here 🙂
You can listen to my remake here:
And, to contrast it to the original, here it is:
For all the nerds:
I used the following libraries:
- QL Symphonic Choirs
- EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Gold (Perc and Harp)
- EWQL Hollywood Orchestral Woodwinds
- Native Instruments The Giant
- 8dio Agitato
- Some Aditional basic sinewave for more bass (doubeling the Bass in the Strings – it sounds more full)
If you want to recreate it for your self, you can download the .midi-file here:
